New Article Announcement
Project directors Meredith Martin and Hannah Williams have published a new article in Public Books, “France’s Art Museums Remain Silent on Haiti.”
The article examines how French museums and heritage institutions addressed—or failed to address—the bicentenary of the 1825 indemnity imposed on Haiti by France. Focusing in particular on exhibitions devoted to Charles X in 2025, Martin and Williams consider what is revealed by the absence of discussion of Haiti, slavery, and colonialism in exhibitions about France’s last king and his circles.
Drawing on their visits to exhibitions at the Mobilier National / Les Gobelins and the Château de Maisons, the authors argue that these silences point to broader challenges in how French museums represent the country’s colonial past and its enduring legacies.
